Linet Sánchez Santa Clara, Cuba | 1989

Linet Sánchez utilizes miniature architectural models in her work — which the artist constructs meticulously by hand — to explore the intimate relationship between memory, the built environment, and symbolic images. Her ongoing body of work includes photographs the artist created during her recent residency at El Espacio 23, a contemporary art space in Miami founded by patron and collector Jorge M. Pérez.

 The artist’s use of fictional miniature spaces, presented as actual objects and (sur)real places, invokes a theme of “the unreliable narrator” and reveals the past as something constructed or modeled, rather than an absolute. The contemplative, quiet nature of these pieces carves out space for self-introspection and, in doing so, alludes to more universal themes of the human condition and our collective search for meaning. Sanchez’s work is a proxy for her own search for truth; while constantly questioning what to remember and how to remember, she transforms her personal history into an arbitrary fact.

Her work, part of public and private collections, has been widely exhibited in countries and places such as the CC Mechelen, Mechelen, Belgium in 2022; Southeast Museum of Photography, Daytona Beach, Florida, U.S.A. in 2018; Rostrum Gallery, Malmö, Sweden. in 2018; Foto Museo Cuatro Caminos, México City, México in 2017; The Annemberg Space for Photography, Los Ángeles, U.S.A. in 2017; Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, Havana, Cuba in 2016; Factoría Habana, Havana, Cuba in 2010 amoung many others. She has been awarded with the Second Prize at the First Edition of Prize for Contemporary Photography of Latinoamerica, Monterrey, Mexico, 2018; Flora ars+natura Residency in collaboration with Artista X Artista, Bogotá, Colombia, 2018;  FotoFest Scholarship, Houston, Texas for 2018; Havana Culture Residency (3rd Edition) from Havana Club International, Havana  in 2013; First Prize at Post-it (3rd Edition), Havana in 2015; and Third Prize of Cuban Art, ArtOnCuba Magazine in 2015 among others.
