PLACE: Group Show
New York, NY – Thomas Nickles Project is pleased to announce Place, a group show of Rocío García, Linet Sánchez, Gertrudis Rivalta and Sandra Cordero. On view from January 20 to March 16, 2024, the exhibition will feature a selection of works that meditate on art’s relationship to site: Place delves into the diverse ways that these artists engage with the categories of space and place to explore questions of identity, memory, gender, imagination, history, power, eros, nostalgia and psyche. Across a diverse range of mediums, these four Cuban-born artists, access their voices from their conception of spatiality, be it physical, abstract, or mental. In her photographs of fictional and architectural maquettes Linet Sánchez reconstructs remnants of her past and her memory. While Gertrudis Rivalta, with intricate paper doll dioramas, uses the magazines of her youth to comment on her own place in history as a Black woman in Cuban society. Rocío García, with her distinctive pictorial language, examines power and love through scenes of secretly evolving intrigues and intimate spaces. And lastly, using nature, science and whimsy, Sandra Cordero invents with collages her own place in another world.
